February 24th marked the conclusion of the RMU Men's D3 Club Hockey season. The Colonials finished the season with an impressive overall record of 16-9 and made it to the semifinals of the 2024 College Hockey East Playoffs.Â
The story of the first half of the season was that of streaks. After dropping the season opener to the University of Michigan at Flint, the overtime heroic, John Betz gave the Colonials a huge 5-4 win over Rowan University in their home opener. The team went on to win their next five in a row, with notable wins against Case Western, Cal U, Duquesne, Kent State and UPJ. Unfortunately, following this five game win streak came a brief three game losing skid to IUP and the division 2 bobcats from Ohio University. The Colonials were able to rebound after this and pick up three victories in a row against fellow CHE opponents. This included a dominant 10-3 performance over Case Western, a narrow 4-3 win against Saint Vincent, and a 3-0 shutout of the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Returning in January RMU dominated in a 8-1 victory against Akron with goals from skaters up and down the roster. The second half of the regular season came with some difficulties as the Colonials were faced with a handful of injuries. Despite these challenges, the Colonials persevered and even saw some new additions to the roster in RMU D4 goaltender Luke Zukowski. As the Colonials finished out the regular season, they were handed losses from St. Vincent (2-3) Kent State (4-6) and Cal U (2-5), but came out on top against Duquesne (6-2), IUP (4-3) and WVU (5-3).Â
Another notable highlight was the return of Senior Forward, Tyler Weekley. Weekley had been battling an injury for some time, but was given the okay from doctors to suit up to make his season debut on Senior Night where he managed to pick up a goal and had a plus/minus of +4.Â
The 2023-24 season was full of many ups and downs, but the team persisted through the challenges and were able to secure a first round 2-1 victory over CalU as the #3 seed in the CHE playoffs. Despite the Vulcans finding the back of the net first, John Betz not only tied the game at 1-1, but also added a second goal that put the Colonials ahead, ultimately winning the game. The team dropped their second round game 3-2 to IUP to bring the season to a close.Â
The Colonials will be losing leaders in Brian Baker, Tyler Weekley, Max Ermigiotti, and Brandon Luff who have made major impacts on this team and will be missed greatly. Fortunately, the team returns a lot of familiar faces such as Parker Smith who led the team in goals, assists, points, game winning goals, and power play goals. Some other notable players include rookie Adam Sciorilli, and upperclassmen John Betz and Justin Newton.
Looking ahead, the Colonials look to make an even deeper playoff run with not only the talent they have coming back, but with the new talent they bring in.Â
