Columbus, OH - On Saturday, February 17th, the RMU Club Bowling teams hit the road and traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the fifth Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament of the season. On the Men's Varsity side, the team came out strong and fought hard all the way until the end to secure a tournament victory by a margin of just 13 pins. The Men's Varsity team placed 1st out of 16 teams with a 214 average, while the Men's JV team took home 3rd place out of 8 teams with an average of 185. On the women's side, the Colonials took home a 10th place finish out of 16 teams, for an average of 154 for the tournament.
On the individual side, several Colonials received recognition and were awarded spots on all conference teams. Racking up Men's Varsity 1st All Conference team honors were Senior Matthew Hanson with an average of 219.53 and Junior James Meyer averaging 213.79. Senior Alexander Smith had a 209.80 average earning a spot on the 2nd All Conference team and making the Men's Varsity All-Rookie team was Freshman Cameron Wegert, averaging 195.07. Also receiving a spot on the Women's Honorable Mention team was Sophomore Grace Oklota with an average of 178.16.
RMU also handed out a few awards of their own. Lydia Heymann and Kendall Battles were this year's recipients of the RMU Character Award. The recipients of this award display moral excellence through one's actions, compete with integrity, and overcome adversity at times when it may be difficult to do so. Next is RMU's Newcomer Award, given this year to Britney Goins and Cole Dalton. These two freshman have adapted to the collegiate level especially well and have made an instant impact o the Colonial squad.
Looking ahead, the Men's Varsity team secured a second place finish in a conference of 19 teams. The Colonials are currently waiting on a potential invitation to the USBC Collegiate Sectional Tournament in Michigan (March 7-11). As of right now, the women's team is waiting for their final results to be posted to the OBC website but it is estimated to end with an 8th place finish out of 18 teams. Regardless of placing, Director of Bowling Operations, John Michalenko reflects on how "It has been a very successful year for both teams and things are really trending in the right direction."
