RMU Club Sports Introduces Daryn Freedman as Men's Club Basketball Head Coach

Daryn Freedman begins a new chapter leading the men's club basketball team

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Robert Morris University Club Sports is proud to announce the hiring of Daryn Freedman as the new Head Coach of the RMU Men's Club Basketball team.

Freedman brings more than 25 years of coaching experience at the professional, collegiate, prep school, and high school levels. The 2026-27 season will mark his 19th season as a head coach. During his career, his teams have won 12 conference championships and nearly 300 games, establishing a reputation for building championship-caliber programs and developing student-athletes.

"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Freedman to the Robert Morris University Club Sports family," said Payton Ernst, Director of Competitive and Recreational Sports. "Daryn's extensive coaching experience, proven success in recruiting and player development, and ability to build championship-caliber programs make him an outstanding fit for our department. His vision for building a successful culture, combined with his expertise in structuring and growing competitive programs, aligns perfectly with our commitment to providing an exceptional student-athlete experience. I am incredibly excited about the future of our Men's Club Basketball program under his leadership and look forward to seeing the program continue to grow and compete at the highest level."

Most recently, Freedman served as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Penn State Greater Allegheny in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. During his tenure, the Lions captured both a PSUAC Tournament Championship and a PSUAC Regular Season Championship while earning the No. 1 ranking in the USCAA Division II National Poll for 10 consecutive weeks during the 2023-24 season.

Although his first season at Penn State Greater Allegheny was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Freedman used that year to assemble what many consider the strongest recruiting class in program history. The class included future All-Americans Bryce Phillips, Chris Killings, and Jeremiah Miller. In 2021-22, the Lions made a surprising run to the PSUAC semifinals while regularly starting five freshmen. Signature victories over Carlow and Penn State York highlighted the season before the team fell in overtime to the eventual conference champions.

The following year, Penn State Greater Allegheny reached new heights by capturing the 2022-23 PSUAC Tournament Championship. After defeating Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Brandywine in the postseason, the Lions earned an 82-70 victory over Penn State Wilkes-Barre at the Bryce Jordan Center to claim the title. The championship secured a berth in the USCAA National Tournament, where the Lions upset defending national champion Southern Maine before falling to the eventual national champion.

Freedman followed that success with another outstanding season in 2023-24. Penn State Greater Allegheny opened conference play with a 12-0 record, finished 16-3 in conference play to earn a share of the regular season championship, and advanced to the conference championship game. The Lions again qualified for the USCAA National Tournament after spending 10 weeks ranked No. 1 nationally.

Before leading Penn State Greater Allegheny, Freedman spent two seasons as Associate Head Coach at Point Park University, helping guide the Pioneers to consecutive River States Conference Tournament appearances while recruiting several highly regarded high school players and junior college All-Americans.

Freedman's coaching career also includes extensive NCAA Division I experience. He spent 10 seasons working alongside Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach John Calipari, beginning as a student assistant at the University of Massachusetts during the Minutemen's Elite Eight and Final Four runs.

After graduating from UMass with a degree in Sports Management, Freedman followed Calipari to the NBA's New Jersey Nets, where he worked in basketball operations, scouting, and player personnel. He later joined Calipari's staffs with the Philadelphia 76ers and the University of Memphis, serving as Director of Basketball Operations at Memphis.

Prior to the 2005-06 season, Freedman joined Ron Everhart's staff at Northeastern University as an assistant coach, helping assemble one of the nation's top recruiting classes. He later followed Everhart to Duquesne University, where he was recognized as one of the top mid-major recruiters in Division I basketball. During the 2006-07 season, Freedman also served as co-interim head coach during Duquesne's road victory over nationally ranked Boston College.

Freedman has also enjoyed tremendous success at the prep school and high school levels. During five seasons at Kiski Prep, his teams won five consecutive conference championships, climbed as high as No. 3 in the national prep school rankings, and helped 17 players earn NCAA Division I basketball scholarships. He also served as head coach at Brimmer and May School, Gateway High School, and Ambridge High School.

Internationally recognized for developing post players, Freedman has worked with numerous NBA players, including Marcus Camby, Keith Van Horn, Samuel Dalembert, Sim Bhullar, and Earl Barron, along with many professionals who have gone on to successful careers overseas and in the NBA G League.

Freedman also served as a coach, clinician, and commissioner at the renowned Five-Star Basketball Camp held at Robert Morris University, where he coached future NBA stars including LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Kevin Durant. For more than a decade, he has also worked with USA Basketball, helping train future Olympians, including Paige Bueckers, while serving as a coach and volunteer at national camps and clinics.

In addition to earning his bachelor's degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts, Freedman holds a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law.

Outside of coaching, he serves as President and Director of Basketball Stars of America, one of the nation's premier youth basketball development and tournament organizations. Freedman and his wife, Dana, reside in Robinson Township with their children, Hannah and Max.

RMU Club Sports is excited to welcome Coach Freedman to RMU and looks forward to the continued growth and success of the Men's Club Basketball program under his leadership.
