George Makricostas Added to Team Greece

Colonial Defensemen added to 2023 Amerigol LATAM Cup team

It's been over 10 years since Greece has played in international play and they will look to make a triumphant return at the 2023 Amerigol LATAM Cup in Sunrise, Florida this upcoming August. And for RMU D1 Club Hockey player George Makricostas, he will look to be one of the key contributors in getting Greek hockey back on the map. 

Makricostas made his return to the game of hockey in 2022 with the Men's Division One club team after a year off. Makricostas was a staple on Mike Joseph's defense as a hard hitting two way threat. He finished the 2022-23 campaign with 1 goal and 4 assists. George will return for one final season in 2023-24. 

To qualify for any of the teams in the tournament you must have familial ties to that country. Makricostas has tons of family spread out amongst Greece with his moms side in Mesta and dads in Kardamyla, both on the island of Chios. When asked he said his family was beyond excited for George to represent Greece and they can't wait to see what this does for the future of Greek hockey. Hockey isn't the biggest sport in Greece so they all hope this can help expand the game. 

George found out about his spot on the roster earlier in April via text and said "it was a shock and an honor". Joining him on the roster are the cousins of Anaheim Ducks star forward Trevor Zegras, Billy and Brady, the former University of Michigan Forward Niko Porikos, UNLV Club Forward Angelos Tsalafos, Netminder Demetri Condolios of the USPHL, Forward Sotirois Karageorgos, and defenseman George Manolis with many more names to be added. Makricostas will be part of the leadership group and will have the A on his jersey. 

Makricostas and the Greece squad will be staying at NHL hotels for the tournament and using the Florida Panthers facilities and rink for their games and practices. Puerto Rico, the reigning champs of 2022, will look to go back to back. Lebanon, Egypt, Armenia, and Israel have all also confirmed their spot in the 2023 Amerigol Latam Cup. 

After hopefully securing a championship for Greece, Makricostas then will shift his focus to helping RMU secure another CHMA title after falling just shy in 2023. "Our expectation to be back where we were last year, in the championship just with a different result,". We wish George and all of Team Greece best of luck at this year's tournament!
