RMU Outlasts Syracuse in Charity Night Shootout Thriller

RMU Island Sports Center Clearview Arena, Moon Township, PA

The Robert Morris University ACHA Division I hockey team earned a 5-4 shootout victory over Syracuse Friday night at RMU Island Sports Arena during a memorable Charity Night benefiting the Mario Lemieux Foundation. All proceeds from the evening, including raffle tickets, jersey auctions, and Chuck-a-Puck, were donated to the foundation. Funds go toward cancer research and clinical trials. To date, more than $40 million has been invested in clinical trials across the Pittsburgh region and beyond. RMU skated in special 90's gradient jerseys in support of the cause. The ceremonial puck drop featured the captains of both teams, with Drew Perrish delivering the official drop. John Tucchi performed the national anthem before puck drop.

First Period:

Syracuse controlled much of the period, outshooting RMU 13-8. A potential Syracuse goal at 17:30 was waved off due to a hand pass, but the Orange struck late, scoring with 13.9 seconds remaining to take a 1–0 lead into the first intermission.

Second Period:

Momentum stayed with Syracuse in the second period as they added goals at 9:50 and 13.8 seconds remaining. RMU struggled to generate offense, managing just four shots, while Syracuse fired 13 more to extend their advantage.

Third Period Comeback:

The Colonials stormed back in the third period, igniting the home crowd with four unanswered goals:

  • Rohrich struck again at 3:14, burying a goal bar-down assisted by #7 Trevor Schmidt and #4 Andrew Finnegan, sending the crowd into a frenzy and tying the game at 4-4.

Overtime & Shootout

Overtime solved nothing despite Syracuse holding a 10-2 shot advantage. The game advanced to a shootout, where both teams scored in the first round and were denied in the second. In the third round, Rohrich delivered the decisive goal, and the RMU goaltender sealed the win with a clutch save.

Final: RMU 5, Syracuse 4 (SO)

  • Rohrich (2 goals, shootout winner)

  • Passante

  • Young

The Colonials showcased resilience, energy, and clutch execution in a night that celebrated both competitive hockey and an important cause.
