The Men's D3 Club Hockey Team opened their season up at home against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Mountain Cats. The Colonials would look to begin their season with a win and get off to a great start.
Â
RMU saw a few chances early on in the first period, but were unable to convert any. UPJ, on the other hand, was able to score a goal early on after capitalizing on a power play. The Mountain Cats held a one goal lead, but the Colonials would not let this last long after John Betz collected a rebound and buried it past the keeper. The score of this one was now 1-1 with just three minutes gone in the first period. Just minutes later, Luke Rose set up Andrew Komorowski perfectly and RMU would now lead 2-1. Despite being the first game of the season, the Colonials looked very good. Back-and-forth play continued throughout the remainder of the first period, but neither team were able to find the back of the net. The first period would close with a 2-1 Colonial lead.
Â
Similarly to the first period, UPJ was able to score on another power play early on and they would tie the game at 2 goals a piece. The Mountain Cats kept the pressure going, but Jacob Fulton was doing well to not give up any more goals. At the 9 minute mark, Tyler Weekly snuck a beautiful shot past the UPJ goalie and put the Colonials back in the lead at 3-2. Minutes later, Parker Smith was able to extend the Colonial lead after some frantic play in front of the Mountain Cat goal. The 4-2 lead just wasn't good enough for Tyler Weekly, though, when he scored his second goal of the game after a beautiful solo-run past a UPJ defender. The second period would come to an end with a dominant 5-2 Colonial lead. RMU would definitely look to play cleanly going into the third as the Mountain Cats were only able to score their two goals on power plays.
Â
UPJ was able to earn another power play early on, but this time RMU was able to kill it and maintain their 5-2 lead. At the 13 minute mark, an in-form Tyler Weekly got his hat trick after he deflected a Brian Baker shot into the Mountain Cat goal. With not much time left and a comfortable 6-2 lead, the Colonials could smell their first victory of the season. UPJ proved they weren't going to go down without a fight, though, when they got a goal back at the 5 minute mark. They continued to apply the pressure, and it paid off once again when they snuck a shot in just below the bar. The Mountain Cats cut the Colonial lead to 6-4, but with just 2 minutes remaining they would need a small miracle to tie this one up. UPJ earned another power play late, and the Colonials would have to defend a 6 on 4 with the empty Mountain Cat net. They were able to fend UPJ off for the remaining seconds, and would win this game 6-4. RMU would start the season just how they wanted, with a victory against a rival team.
