RMU Takes Down Rutgers in a Heated 6-2 Victory

The D1 Men's Club Hockey Team will kick their two-game weekend series against Rutgers here tonight on The Island. After starting the season 1-1, RMU will hopefully jump above .500 and get their season going.

The Colonials got things going early into the first period when Gregory Kraemer scored the home goal of the season off of a beautiful find from Andrew Finnegan. With a dream start thanks to the freshman duo, RMU kept things rolling after scoring once again minutes later. This time, it was Justin Adamski dangling through the defense and finishing nicely. This marked Adamski's 100th point here at RMU, a truly astonishing milestone. Rutgers continued to have no answers for the Colonials in this first period. The scoring barrage continued when who else but Justin Adamski buried a perfect shot into the top shelf to make the score 3-0. This lead just wasn't enough for RMU, as Keith Reed buried yet another goal off of a nice find from Garrett Walker to increase the Colonial advantage to 4-0. The first period would close, and Rutgers were already left with a huge deficit to try and climb out of.

Rutgers did exactly what they needed to do early into the second period, as they earned a power play and capitalized on it with a goal. Their work was not finished though, as RMU still held a 4-1 lead. Garrett Walker would not let this goal go unanswered, as he was in the perfect place for a rebound and smashed a deflection into the net. The Colonials regained their four goal lead with a score of 5-1. Late into the period, things got very heated as helmets flew and punches were thrown between the two sides. RMU used this as fuel for their next goal, with Justin Adamski scoring his hat-trick just minutes after the scuffle. Unfortunately, Rutgers grabbed a goal back seconds later after a shot snuck past Parker Rutherford. The chippy second period would close with a 6-2 Colonial lead.

The third period got underway, and all the Colonials had to do was maintain their 6-2 lead. RMU earned a few power plays throughout the period, but were unable to score on any. This wasn't a big deal, though, with their massive lead. Neither team really got anything going, and eventually the period would close.

RMU would come out with a 6-2 victory in this physical battle against Rutgers, and the two sides would face each other once again tomorrow. Parker Rutherford had an outstanding game, saving 22 out of 24 shots. The Colonials would look to take the momentum from this into tomorrow and sweep the series against Rutgers.
