The Colonials head into the winter sitting in third place overall in the Central Division of the New Penn Conference. RMU finishes the fall season with a record of 6-2, already surpassing their win total of only five games in the 2022-2023 season.
The Men's Club Baseball team closed out their fall season on November 5th taking two of three games against Akron.
The team began with a dominant win over Edinboro in an exhibition game to start off the season. This success rolled into the remainder of the fall, and Coach David Williams knew he had a good squad on the field after this first performance. Despite dropping the next contest to CalU by a score of 9-5, the team never felt like a win was completely out of reach. RMU continued to find ways to get guys on base, but just missed out on one or two more timely hits.
Following the loss to CalU, the Colonials won six games in a row with wins over CMU, PSUAC member Penn State Beaver, and Akron. In their eight games in the fall, the Colonials plated 65 runs, with 29 of them coming in their two wins on the road at Akron. After losing five graduating seniors last year, there were some concerns as to where the team would be heading into this season. Some main concerns included replacing starting pitching and reliable bats.
Although these were tough losses, between the returning players and a group of new talent, the Colonials proved to be very consistent up and down the lineup. On the defensive side, freshmen RHP Preston Holowka led the way with a 3.08 ERA and three wins, followed by Senior RHP Logan Strausbaugh with two wins, and Sophomore RHP Nathan Scherer picking up one win. The Colonials are also looking forward to getting some guys back into the lineup that were out due to injury to better increase their chances at a playoff run.
Looking ahead to the spring season, the team will head to Panama City from March 10th-16th . With a game schedule yet to be announced, the Colonials will participate in the annual Swing into Spring event located at Publix Sports Complex. Conference play will resume on March 23rd as RMU travels to CalU for two games, then welcomes IUP and WVU to Moon Park for two important series that will have potential postseason implications.
The Colonials have had an impressive start to the 2023-2024 season thanks to not only the strong leadership from returning players, but the young talent that has joined the roster this year. Here is to a great spring season, and stay tuned for some behind the scenes coverage of the team this winter.
