RMU Club Baseball is Swinging Into Spring

Kick off to Spring Season in PCB

March 11-16th marked the Colonials return to the annual Swing Into Spring Event taking place in Panama City, Florida.

After arriving at PCB early Monday morning upon completing the 15 hour drive through the night, the Colonials had the day off to recover before they took on Indiana University and The University of Boston on Tuesday.

The team took down a solid Hoosier's team by a narrow margin of 10-8. Senior RHP Logan Strausbaugh got the start and was relieved by senior Dom Vins to start the 6th. RMU was leading 5-0 majority of the game, while staying solid defensively, before the Hoosiers climbed back into it when they put up a seven spot in the 5th inning to take a 7-5 lead. From there, RMU could have folded like we have seen in the past, but rather responded with five runs of their own and Vins closed the door in the 7th to secure a Colonial victory.

On Tuesday the Colonials faced the University of Boston with freshman RHP Preston Holowka getting the nod. Boston came out strong with a lead off triple and would go up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first. The Colonials held their ground and were down 4-0 heading into the bottom half of the second and managed to plate three runs to make it 4-3. Boston continued to hit the ball well but big defensive plays from RMU kept them right in the game. By the time the fourth inning rolled around, the Colonials exploded for seven runs to give them a 10-4 advantage with a victory in sight. Several defensive mishaps let Boston back into it, putting up four runs of their own between the fourth and fifth innings to cut the RMU lead to 10-8. RMU put up one more in the 6th and all they had to do was hold the Terrors to two runs in the 7th. Unfortunately, this was not the case as Boston made it 11-11 going into the final half of the 7th. The Colonials got the first three on base and Sophomore Ryan Feczko knocked a single to walk it off for a 12-11 win.

After an off day on Wednesday, Robert Morris faced off against D1 Ohio University and the #1 D2 team in Ohio State. Roberts got the start against Ohio and did what he could to keep the Colonials in it after giving up 5 in four innings, but the Bobcats' bats proved to be too much even with freshman Nate Schmid coming in in relief. The Colonials put the bat on the ball, but could not find a gap, as well as several errors which lead to a 15-2 loss.

The finale in PCB was against #1 Ohio State which was one RMU had circled on their calendars. Preston Holowka got the start again and did all he could to keep the game at a manageable score for the Colonial offense. RMU went up 1-0 after the first but never saw the lead after that. The only thing missing from this game was one or two more timely hits to get guys around, but this unfortunately led to a 7-3 Colonial loss.

Looking ahead, RMU travels to top ranked CalU before welcoming #7 WVU, CMU, and IUP to Moon Park for what is shaping up to be a very exciting spring season. The Colonials have been battle tested up to this point in the season and are prepared to handle the tough competition that is coming their way.
