RMU Island Sports Complex - On Saturday November 11th the CHE RMU Men's D4 Club Ice Hockey Team hosted PennWest California University of Pennsylvania for their home opener. The Colonials dominated in this CHE championship rematch improving their overall season record to 4-1.
About 7 minutes into the game, Freshman Alexander Donley scored the first goal of the game, assisted by fellow freshman Brandon Lindsey. Only a few minutes later did sophomore Deven Lomago put one in the back of the net this time assisted by Donley. Later in the period, sophomore Carter Bossong added another goal for the Colonials assisted by freshmen William Shaver and John Wayne Kravitz. With only 2 minutes left in the 1st period and a second left on an RMU power play sophomore Ryan Riffner added an unassisted goal putting the Colonials up 4-0.
Cal U added their first and only goal of the game about half way through the 2nd period. Although the Colonials did not find the back of the net in the 2nd period, they scored their final 6 goals throughout the 3rd. Riffner added two more goals, for his second hat trick of the season. Riffner's 3rd goal was his 4th power play goal of the season and assisted by Kravitz and junior Tyler Antonellis. Around the twelve minute mark, off of a tic-tac-toe play, sophomore Owen Romano put the score at 7-1 assisted by Antonellis and Connor Borsh, his first point of the season coming off an injury.
Kravitz found himself putting one past the Cal U goaltender about a minute later, adding the 8th goal for the Colonials. Despite three straight goals earlier in the night, Riffner proved that he was on fire as he added his fourth goal of the game assisted by Lomago. Freshman Nathan Covato scored the 10th and final goal for the Colonials unassisted with about 3 minutes left in the game. This showing by RMU proved that they not only have some strong returners, but this rookie class is a force to be reckoned with.
The CHE RMU Men's D4 club team takes on Carnegie Mellon University at the shadyside arena on Saturday November 18th at 6pm. They return home to face The College of Wooster and Duquesne University December 1st and 2nd.
