Men's D1 Club Ice Hockey | 9/28/2021 12:13:00 PM

Moon, PA- RMU's D1 Club Hockey opened their 2021-2022 campaign with a sweep over Canisius College. In the season opener on Friday night in front of a packed house, the Colonials took care of business and won 8-1 over the Golden Griffins. In the rematch the following day, the score was a lot tighter but the result remained the same as RMU won 5-4.

Game 1: RMU wins 8-1

The Colonials may have found the back of the net eight times in their opening game of the year, but very few came early in this game. Santino Multari was the only goalscorer of the opening period, when he deflected a shot from the point past the Canisius netminder. Then for a majority of the 2nd period the Colonials found themselves stuck in their own end.

But RMU got their first powerplay of the day with just under two minutes to play in the 2nd period and still holding onto a 1-0 lead. But Roman Kraemer would double that lead with a beautiful individual effort from his own blue line to make it 2-0. A Justin Adamski tip in goal off a shot from the point with 20 seconds to go in the period meant RMU had transformed the game in moments, swinging momentum in their direction entering the final period with a 3-0 lead.

From there RMU kept on the pressure and kept finding the back of the net. Keith Reed scored his first of the season with an end to end play. Shortly after, Kraemer added his 2nd powerplay goal of the night. Canisius would end Kevin Mackey's shutout bid midway through the 3rd with a powerplay goal to make it 5-1. But Roman Kraemer would cap off the night with a hat trick and then some with 2 more goals, bringing his total on the night to 4. Austin Lapiana closed out the game with a powerplay goal with 4 minutes to go in what was a dominant 3rd period for the Colonials.

Game 2: RMU wins 5-4

The rematch of these two squads saw a very different looking game than the night prior. Canisius opened the scoring six minutes in with a 4v4 goal from Zach Wagner. However, RMU answered back with 2 goals over the next eight minutes from Giovanni Palombo and Santino Multari. Canisius' Zach Wagner got his 2nd of the game with 100 seconds left in the period to tie it, but RMU's Austin Lapiana scored his 2nd of the season to make it 3-2 Colonials at the break.

Robert Byrne got his first of the year only two and a half minutes into the 2nd period to double the RMU lead. The Golden Griffins would answer back in the middle of the period with a goal of their own to make it a 1 goal game again. But Keith Reed scored a few minutes later to help RMU enter the final period of play with a 5-3 lead.

Early in the 3rd period, Zach Wagner for Canisius got a hat trick with his 3rd goal of the game. With only a one goal lead, RMU locked it down defensively and prevented Canisius from getting too many more quality chances. Goaltender Parker Rutherford made some key stops down the stretch and RMU picked up the 5-4 win to start the season 2-0-0.
