Moon, PA- The D1 Club Hockey opened their 2020-2021 campaign with a 5-3 win over Canisius College, picking up right where they left off last season. It was the first game the team had played in nearly a year.

A year's worth of anticipation led up to puck drop, but it would only take less than four minutes before the first goal was scored. Senior defenseman Andrew Hachmeister fired one home into the Canisius net to give RMU the early advantage. Joseph Zottola and Braeden Harbison with the assists. Three minutes later, the Colonials would double their lead as Justin Adamski would make it a 2-0 game. Noah Raymundo and Nathan Mickey recorded assists on the goal.

Not long after, RMU would go on the powerplay for the first time this season. While RMU did not score on the powerplay, the Colonials third goal basically counted as a powerplay goal. Three seconds after the Canisius penalty had expired Braeden Harbison scored his first of the season, assisted by Steven Ralston and Nathan Mickey. RMU led 3-0 midway through the first period.

Canisius got back into the game with a goal late in the first period to send it to intermission 3-1. They would score two more times early in the 2nd period, and just like that it was a 3-3 game. With the game tied and RMU on the penalty kill, the Colonials got a boost from Tyler Draper. The sophomore forward netted a shorthanded goal (assisted by Adamski) to give RMU the lead once again. Once in the lead again, the Colonials wouldn't let it slip away again. Hachmeister added another goal (assisted by Ralston and Zottola) a few minutes later on the powerplay to give RMU a two goal cushion.

Goaltender Kevin Mackey shut the door after the brief Canisius surge, as the Colonials netminder stopped 32 of 35 for a .914 SV%. The Colonials outshot Canisius 58-35, and the penalty minutes fell as 16 for Canisius and 10 for RMU.

The D1 Club Hockey team will be in action next when they travel to the Harborcenter in Buffalo on Sunday to once again take Canisius.
