Moon, PA- The D1 Club Hockey team hosted the University of Alabama for a two game series down at the Island Sports Center. The Colonials made the trip south to play the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa back in 2019 for a two game series. While they split the 2019 series, the Colonials swept the 2021 series in two close games.

Game 1: RMU wins 4-3

The Colonials looked very strong in the first period of play, outshooting the Crimson Tide 17-5. They also scored one for their efforts, as Gio Palumbo scored with less than five minutes left in the 1st to make it 1-0 RMU.

The 2nd period saw a flurry of goals from both teams. The period started with back to back goals from the Crimson Tide, and just over eight minutes into the second period Alabama led 2-1. But the Colonials would score three times in the final 7:23 of the period to enter the 2nd intermission up 4-2. First, a powerplay blast from the point from Jeremy Jenkins found its way home to tie it. Then Roman Kraemer gave RMU the lead with less than two minutes in the period, and Santino Multari netted one with less than a minute left.

In the 3rd period, the Colonials played even with the Crimson Tide as both teams traded chances across the ice. With 4:35 remaining in the game, Alabama would score to make it a one goal game. Even when the opposition pulled their goalie at the end of the game, RMU goalie Kevin Mackey stood tall and secured the win for the team. He stopped 36 of 39 shots he faced in the game. Also, while he may not have recorded a goal Justin Adamski was all over the ice offensively for RMU, being credited with an assist on each of the 4 Colonial goals.

Game 2: RMU wins 3-2 (Shootout)

The second game of the series the following day saw it start off as quite the goalie battle. Despite a combined 31 shots in the first period between the two teams, there was only 1 goal. The Crimson Tide scored at 16:59 to take the lead entering the intermission. A powerplay goal from Alabama would be the only goal of the second period as well, and the Colonials trailed 2-0 entering the 3rd period.

After throwing over thirty shots on goal with no luck, the Colonials finally broke through with a Roman Kraemer goal with 4:52 remaining in the game. Even with the goal to bring it within one, it still seemed like RMU was out of time as the game ticked into its final seconds. However, with only 8.5 seconds left in the game, Gio Palumbo buried the puck in the back of the net to tie the game! With so little time left, the game went to OT. When a winner wasn't decided there, the team's cleared the ice for a shootout.

Justin Adamski had an assist on each goal the Colonials scored against Alabama, with his 4 in Game 1 and assisting both goals in Game 2. However, in the shootout he wouldn't need to be the setup man as he would be the only player on either side to score a goal. Adamski was credited with the game winning goal, and Parker Rutherford was stellar in stopping 47 of 49 shots and then the 3 shootout attempts.

The D1 Club Hockey team improves to 12-2-0 this season, and will be traveling out to Chicago this weekend to take on the Roosevelt University Lakers.
