Buffalo, NY- Men's D1 Club Hockey made the trip north this weekend for a 2 game series against the University of Buffalo. The Colonials have been playing really strong as of late, and the team continued their winning ways with a sweep of Buffalo. They took the Friday night game 6-1, and they won the Saturday game 4-2. The team is now 6-1-1 on the season and is beginning to make noise on the national scene. Last week, the Colonials were nominated to be a part of the Top 25 teams in the ACHA currently. The Top 25 rankings are determined by members of the ACHA, and while the Colonials just missed the cut last week, these two wins over Buffalo might be the boost they need.
Game 1: RMU wins 6-1
Robert Morris started with a different starting lineup on Friday than they had in previous games. Veterans Mickey, Joyce, and Zottola got the nod up front, and Gielarowski and Defelice started on the blueline. Goaltender
Lewis Richardson got the start in net. The Colonials got a power play opportunity several minutes into the opening period, and they made the most of it.
Antoni Chirgott got the goal tally, with
Noah Raymundo and
Jeffery Millin getting the assists. Seconds later,
Joshua Brantner made it 2-0 after some effective puck movement from
Andrew Hachmeister and
John Parks. The two quick goals shook Buffalo enough to take their timeout.
With around 6 to go in the first period, the Colonials found themselves short handed. However, this did not mean they weren't still thinking about extending their lead. Defenseman
Zach Gielarowski scored while on the penalty kill, assist by
David Roebuck to make it 3-0. The first period kept coming up Colonials as RMU got another power play opportunity in the first period and wouldn't be denied.
Dillon Joyce tipped Hachmeister's shot past the goalie to make it 4-0 with the second RMU power play goal of the period. RMU entered the intermission up 4-0. The teams would trade a few penalties back and forth in the second, and Buffalo's power play goal was the only goal scored in the 2nd.
Once again on the power play, Robert Morris struck to make it 5-1. Millin scored RMU's 3rd power play goal of the night assisted by Raymundo and Chirgott. Naturally, the only way to end the night for RMU was with one last power play goal. Gielarowski got his 2nd of the game from Hachmeister and Joyce to make it 6-1. This would be Robert Morris' 4th and final power play goal of the evening.
Game 2: RMU wins 4-2
Robert Morris came back the next day and continued their trend of scoring in the first period.
Matthew Butson got the goal for RMU to make it 1-0. And just like the night prior, the power play kept scoring for RMU. A power play marker for
Nathan Mickey (assisted by Butson and Adamski) made it 2-0 for the Colonials entering the intermission.
The game was tighter defensively in this one, and more disciplined as well. There was not nearly as many penalties in this game as there was in Game 1 and it showed on the scoreboard for both teams. None of this applied to
Matthew Butson though. Butson picked up hs 2nd goal of the game and 3rd point of the night to extend the Colonials lead to 3-0. Buffalo got one back a few minutes later, but RMU would reopen up their lead to 3 by the end of the period.
Justin Adamski scored to make it 4-1 for Robert Morris as time ticked down in the 2nd period. Buffalo would get a goal in the third, but that's all they would find as the Colonials shut the door and closed out the weekend sweep.
