D3 Hockey Surging into Playoffs

Colonials have won four in a row on their way to making the playoffs, still face an uphill battle.

d3 hockey vs pennwest cal playoffs 22-23

Men's D3 Club Ice Hockey | 3/2/2023 2:33:00 PM

Moon, PA- The Men's D3 ACHA Club Hockey team is playing their best hockey when they need it most, directly ahead of the CHE D3 Playoffs. The Colonials have won their last four games and five of their last 6 which has helped them finish the season with a 8-9-1-3 (W-L-OTL-T) record. That win streak helped the team sneak in as the 6th and final seed of the playoffs, making it in over IUP, WVU, Duquesne, and Case Western Reserve.

The team did struggle at the start of the season but once the spring semester rolled around the Colonials went 5-2-0-1. The hot streak to end the season has been against some of the best teams in the CHE as well, an even more encouraging sign for the postseason. They tied #1 seed Kent State at home 2-2, they beat #2 seed Pitt-Johnstown in the regular season finale 3-1, and they defeated #3 seed and first round opponent PennWest California 4-1.

That last game is of note not only since PennWest California is RMU's quarterfinal opponent, but because RMU's victory in the regular season came at Cal. RMU is going to have to continuously win as the lower seed and visitor in these playoffs, so a big win on the road is a huge confidence booster. The Colonials and Vulcans tied back when they played at the Island, and the Colonials won on the road at Rostraver. These teams will be meeting for the third time this season at their third different arena, as #1 Kent State plays host for all playoff matchups.

Realistically as the #6 seed, the expectations on RMU is low to advance past the quarterfinals against a team that has been in the finals each of the last 3 seasons and won 2 of them. But if there was ever time for a sleeper pick to make some noise in the CHE postseason, it could be this squad.
