Moon Township, PA - Saturday November 11th, the RMU Men's Club Volleyball team hosted a fall season tournament facing teams from Carnegie Mellon University, Slippery Rock University, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The club has gained new talent this year who are led by some stand out returners allowing the Colonials to split into two separate teams for the tournament. RMU R was led by Junior Captain and setter Ryan Filipcic and RMU S was led by fellow Captain and outside hitter Senior Skyler Higgins. The teams were as follows:
RMU R
RMU S
The Colonials fought hard throughout the day with big wins, and comebacks, thus earning spots far into the bracket. Starting off the day, in round one, the RMU R team won a match against a tough CMU team. The RMU S team went on to lead a comeback (8-16) to come back and win 25-23. This was a huge momentum boost for both RMU teams.
Going into the playoff matches, the Colonials were seeded 3rd and 4th with both teams winning the first round of playoffs. Unfortunately, both teams then lost in the semi-finals finishing in 3rd and 4th place overall in the tournament. The IUP 1 team walked away tournament champions beating CMU in 3 sets.
Some stand out players from the Colonials include Freshman Noah Passalinqua from the RMU S team and Freshman Carson Mazurkiewicz from the RMU R team. When asked about the tournament, Filipcic felt that by splitting teams, the Colonials were at a bit of a disadvantage but both teams overcame that challenge and played well, especially those who hadn't played in a tournament before.
