Toledo, OH- The Robert Morris D1 Club Hockey team had a hard fought weekend on the road as their regular season approaches its conclusion. The Colonials traveled west to take on Toledo in a 2 game series. In the first game, RMU struggled to get the offense going as they lost 6-2. In the second game, RMU bounced back with a 6 goal effort which they needed. They won 6-5 in overtime to split the weekend series 1-1. RMU now sits with a record of 24-10-1 in 35 games this season with one game left before the CHMA playoffs.
RMU loses to Toledo 6-2
The Colonials had a rough go of things in the first matchup against Toledo, and it was apparent from the beginning. Toledo scored the opening goal of the game 10:47 into the first period, and RMU found itself in unfamiliar territory as they've scored the opening goal in 25 of their 33 previous games to that point. The Colonials answered back a few minutes later on the powerplay to tie the game 1-1.
Trevor Johnson was the one who scored for the Colonials, with
Justin Adamski and
Andrew Hachmeister drawing the assists for the goal. Toledo would score again before the intermission to make 2-1.
The game began getting away from Robert Morris in the 2nd period. Toledo scored twice in 5 minutes through the middle of the period, and just like that it was a 4-1 deficit for RMU. Colonials defenseman
Noah Raymundo got the team back in it with his shot that found the twine with 4 minutes left in the period.
Dillon Joyce and
Paxton Knupp with the assists on the goal. RMU trailed 4-2 at the end of the period, but it would only take two goals to draw even in the game.
Unfortunately for RMU there was two goals scored in the third, but both by Toledo. Both goals came later in the period, and it sealed what was a bad night for the Colonials. The redeeming factor for the team is that they made the necessary adjustments for the next day and the second game.
RMU wins over Toledo 6-5 (OT)
Robert Morris came out with some fire in the second game, and took the lead early. Only 1:13 into the game,
Steven Ralston opened the scoring for the Colonials. By the middle of the period, RMU had made it 2-0.
Jason Defelice set up
Dillon Joyce who buried the opportunity. At the intermission it was 2-0 Colonials.
Toledo would be the first team to score in the second period, but a 2-1 score would not last for long.
Justin Adamski scored for RMU assisted by
Nathan Mickey and
Andrew Hachmeister a minute later to restore the 2 goal lead. It then turned into a 3 goal lead 2 minutes later, as
Dillon Joyce got his 2nd of the game to make it 4-1 when the teams went to intermission.
RMU had the game well in hand at this point, but there was still plenty of game to play. And Toledo made it a game throughout the 3rd. They scored twice in 12 seconds just before 8 minutes into the period, and suddenly it was a 1 goal game at 4-3. The Colonials doubled up their lead again thanks to a strike from
Steven Ralston (Goal #2 on the night for him) to make it 5-3. Yet, the Rockets continued to push and with two goals within the final 4 minutes they forced OT at 5-5.
In overtime, both teams were looking to end the game quickly. And end quickly it did, as the game winning goal was scored 17 seconds into the period. Joseph Zottola set up
Nathan Mickey for the game winner and RMU took the game 6-5. Robert Morris has one last regular season game scheduled this year, as they host Slippery Rock University on February 22nd.
