D1 Finishes Semester Against Delaware

12/10/2019 9:12:00 AM

Newark, DE- D1 Club Hockey wrapped up their first semester portion of their season with a trip east to play the Delaware Blue Hens. Both games were close, but the Colonials came out on the wrong end of both. They dropped the Friday game 6-5 and the Saturday game 5-4.

Game 1: RMU loses 6-5

The Colonials outscored Delaware in two of the 3 periods, but a brutal second period sank RMU in this one.

Trevor Johnson scored the lone goal of the first period, assisted by Matthew Butson and Andrew Hachmeister. RMU took the 1-0 lead into the 2nd period but it wouldn't last long. Delaware tied it early, but Nathan Mickey (asst. Noah Raymundo and David Roebuck) made it 2-1 RMU.

Delaware proceeded to fire off 5 straight goals to end the second period with a 6-2 lead. Goaltender Lewis Richardson was pulled following the period, but he still stopped 30 of 36 in his 40:00 minutes played.

RMU fought valiantly in the 3rd period and nearly pulled off the comeback, but it fell just short. Mickey got his second of the night to make it a 6-3 game. Assists came from Joseph Zottola and Braeden Harbison. Zottola then added a goal of his own, assisted by Mickey and Hachmeister.

With just over 7 minutes to go in the game, Antoni Chirgott cut the deficit to one with a power play goal assisted by Raymundo and Harbison. The Colonials were knocking on the door of the equalizer, but it never came as they fell 6-5.

Game 2: RMU loses 5-4

This game was a lot more back and forth than their match up the night before. No team was able to amass more than a one goal lead and there were 4 separate lead changes in the game. RMU opened the scoring, with team goal scoring leader Nathan Mickey netting his 15th of the season. The goal came on an early power play opportunity for RMU.

Delaware scored two goals to end the 1st period, and the Colonials trailed 2-1 after the first. RMU took the lead early in the second thanks to two goals within the first 7 minutes of the periods.

RMU's offensive defensemen got in on the action, with Noah Raymundo and Andrew Hachmeister both scoring. RMU took the 3-2 lead. Delaware fought right back, and retook the lead 4-3 within 4 minutes of losing the lead. Mickey got his 4th goal of the weekend late in the second to tie it 4-4 entering the 3rd.

Delaware netted a goal early in the 3rd, and it would be the final tally by either team. Goaltender Parker Rutherford stopped 42 of 47 shots in the loss.
