Moon, PA- D1 Club Hockey (now 14-4-1) had a successful two game weekend against the visiting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (now 1-12-0). The Colonials were the heavy favorites for both games entering the weekend, and they did not disappoint.
On Friday, the squad nearly hit double digits in a 9-2 victory. On Saturday, both teams focused more defensively and the final score was a 4-1 Colonials win.
Game 1: RMU Wins 9-2
The Colonials kicked it off with a career first on Friday night. To open the scoring, forward John Parks scored his first ACHA goal to make it 1-0. Forward Joseph Zottola made it 2-0 just over 7 minutes into the game for his first of the night. The Red Dragons would score late into the first to make it a 2-1 game at the break.
RMU was able to net a few more in the second to expand their lead. It started with newly-named captain Steven Ralston scoring less than 2 minutes into the 2nd period. Zottola got another in the goal column, this time on the power play to make it 4-1 before the end of the period.
Nathan Mickey scored a minute and a half into the 3rd to make it a 5-1 game. Parks wasted little time getting from career goal one to two, scoring his 2nd on the night. Antoni Chirgott chipped in with a goal of his own to make it 7-1 with 12 minutes to go.
SUNY Cortland would get one more, but Ralston would add his 2nd and Zottola would complete the hat trick before games end. Starting goalie Christian Pellegrino stopped 28 shots in his first start of the season.
Game 2: RMU Wins 4-1
With less penalties and less goals one could argue this game had less going on. Robert Morris won't complain though, as a full team effort led to a solid victory for the Colonials.
Andrew Hachmeister scored to open the game in RMU's favor, only taking a minute and a half to give RMU the lead. Nathan Mickey scored his first of the game with just over 7 minutes left to give RMU the 2-0 lead.
Mickey would wait around a full period to score his 2nd of the game. He made it 3-1 midway through the 2nd period, following up SUNY Cortland's lone goal of the afternoon. Senior forward David Roebuck scored an insurance goal with 9 minutes to play in the game to give RMU the 4-1 win.
Pellegrino got his 2nd straight start and made the most of it. He stopped 19 of 20 shots in a relatively quiet afternoon for the Colonial netminder. Next up for the D1 Club team, two huge conference games against IUP and Duquesne this weekend.
