University Heights, OH- The D1 Club ice hockey team got back to usual business at an unusual time against John Carroll. A rare Tuesday night matchup had the Colonials on the road to square off against the Blue Streaks. Robert Morris outplayed their opponents on both ends of the ice and controlled the tempo for much of the game. 6 different players scored for the Colonials as they won handily by a score of 7-1. The end of the game brought about some controversy but the Colonials will improve to 3-1-1 on the season.
It didn't take long for Robert Morris to get on the board. Only 3:30 into the opening period, senior forward
David Roebuck set up junior forward
Jeffery Millin to give RMU the early 1-0 lead. John Carroll scored a few minutes later to bring the score back even. It would be the last time the Blue Streaks were on the score sheet. The Colonials got an opportunity on the power play not long after JCU tied it up.
Dillon Joyce fired home a shot on the power play, making it 2-0 for RMU. Joseph Zottola and
Andrew Hachmeister with the assists. For good measure, the Colonials buried one more shot in the 1st period to take the 3-1 lead.
Nathan Mickey scored the goal, and
Noah Raymundo got the assist.
The second period saw the Colonials continue to control the puck and the tempo of the game. Robert Morris out shot JCU 14-9 in the 2nd period and a couple of those shots increased their lead.
Steven Ralston continued his hot start to the season with a goal 6 minutes into the second, captain
Tanner Orr with the helper. Ralston repaid Orr with 7 to go in the second period. Ralston along with
Matthew Butson assisted Orr on his goal to make it 5-1 RMU.
From the start of the 3rd to the end of the game, it started getting real chippy on the ice. John Carroll started throwing questionable hits and were taking penalties for various infractions like roughing, elbowing, and had several misconduct penalties. This led to the Blue Flashes taking runs at RMU players, and RMU reacted by going back at them. The game ended with over a combined 50 penalty minutes, and JCU had a double digit number of penalties called on them in the final period. Ignoring the shenanigans and focusing on the hockey, the Colonials didn't allow JCU to get back into the game thanks to stellar goaltending from
Lewis Richardson and a couple more goals. The first was just past the halfway mark when
Antoni Chirgott scored to make it 6-1 (Zottola and Raymundo with the helpers). Finally,
Nathan Mickey capped it off with his 2nd of the game a little over a minute later to make it 7-1.
Zach Gielarowski and
Dillon Joyce with the assists.
Despite the fleury of penalties each team took in the 3rd, it was ultimately a great rebound performance for the Colonials. They return to action this weekend with two games on the road against the University of Buffalo.
