Pick up win over Duquesne, lose to Pitt

10/22/2019 1:23:00 PM

Moon, PA- The Colonials had two D1 games over the weekend, squaring off against Duquesne and Pitt on back to back nights. When taking on Duquesne, Robert Morris pepper the opposing goaltender with shots. The Colonials outshot the Dukes 65-46 and picked up a big 7-4 conference win. However, the win came at a cost. Captain Tanner Orr sustained a lower body injury, and will be out for sometime moving forward. The next game the team came out flat, and never really got anything going offensively. Pitt took the game 4-1. Robert Morris currently sits at a record of 7-2-1 and are 4-1 in CHMA play.

Game 1: RMU wins 7-4 over Duquesne

Freshman goaltender Parker Rutherford got the start in this one, his 3 start so far in this young season. Noah Raymundo opened the scoring for both RMU and the game with his blast 3:30 into the first period to give RMU the early lead. Then Duquesne scored two quick ones to give the Dukes the lead 2-1. Despite generating far more shot attempts, the Colonials could not get another shot to go in the first and they entered intermission trailing 2-1.

Duquesne got another goal less than a minute into the second period to make it 3-1, and that's finally when the Colonials woke up. They started making crisper passes, made better decision with the puck, and generated more high quality scoring chances. Joseph Zottola cut into the deficit to make it a one goal game at the 12:17 mark of the second period. Nathan Mickey tied it up a couple minutes later to make it a 3-3 game. The scoring frenzy continued as only minutes later, Antoni Chirgott gave RMU the lead with his first goal of the night. Finally, a power play goal by Raymundo closed out the 2nd period with a 5-3 Colonial lead.

Duquesne scored early in the 3rd, but it would be their last goal of the night. Sean Lloyd had all 4 for the Dukes, but RMU showed a team effort trumps an individual one anytime as they came out on top using 5 different goal scorers. Mickey got his 2nd of the night and then Tyler Draper sealed the win for RMU with a goal of his own to secure a 7-4 victory.

Game 2: RMU loses 4-1 to Pitt

The Colonials just never really got anything going in this one. It started with Pitt scoring within the first minute of the period to take the early lead. Neither team had a ton of offensive chances in the first and it showed on the scoreboard with the 1-0 result entering the 2nd period. A power play goal for the Panthers made it 2-0 early on, but RMU got a power play of their own and made the most of it. Jeffery Millin cut the lead in half with his power play goal after some good puck movement from Raymundo and Chirgott. Pitt would get two more goals by game's end, including one that ricocheted off of an RMU players face and behind the goalie.

RMU is in action next on October 25th with 2 home games against Canisius.
