Pittsburgh, PA- The red hot Colonials D3 Club Ice Hockey team traveled to take on Pitt Friday night before hosting Pitt-Johnstown the next afternoon. While it was not another 12 goal performance, Robert Morris continued their winning ways with a big 7-2 victory over Pitt. However, the winning streak would end at 3 games for the Colonials as the visiting team of Pitt-Johnstown won the Saturday game 5-2.
Game 1: RMU defeats Pitt 7-2
From the first period onwards, this game had a very similar feeling as the previous two games had. RMU started quick and applied the offensive pressure in a hurry. The scoring started for the Colonials just before midway through the first, as
Camron Smith got them on the board. Several minutes later,
George Makricostas made it 2-0 for the visiting Colonials. Matthew Simkovic would make it 3-0 a minute and a half later, and
Nolan Puhula would add one of his own to make it 4-0 only 16:05 into the game. Pitt would get one past goaltender
Robert Petrelli late, but it would be 4-1 at the horn.
The 2nd period only saw 2 goals, but both came off of Colonial sticks.
Luke Cirlingione would score an unassisted goal at the 4 and a half minute mark, and
Blake Loges would score a minute after to make the game 6-1. Petrelli shutout the Panthers in the 2nd period. The final frame saw Pitt score midway through to make it 6-2, but it would be their last goal for the game. Simkovic put the game to bed with his second of the night with 5:34 left, and that would be the end of it.
Game 2: RMU loses to Pitt-Johnstown 5-2
Despite outshooting them 28-20, the scoreboard did not match the shot count as RMU couldn't keep the offense going. UPJ would take the lead midway through the first, but
Darrin Sloan scored for RMU shortly after to keep it a tie game. The second period is when the afternoon went wrong for the team. UPJ got 3 goals in the 2nd, including a pair of shorthanded goals that really destroyed RMU's momentum. The third period saw a goalie change for RMU.
Nathan Puhula started the game for RMU, but after the second
Russell Mower went in to finish the game. Both teams would score one more time before the horn sounded.
Blake Loges got his second of the weekend with a few minutes left in the game for the Colonials second and final goal.
RMU is now 4-2-1 on the season, and will have an opportunity to get some revenge against UPJ soon. Their next game is November 1st against Pitt Johnstown.
