The Men's Division 1 ACHA team was looking to build off a second-place finish in 2022-23 facing off with Canisius and Syracuse for back-to-back weekends to start the season. A sweep over Canisus including a shootout winner from Michael Hurst in the first game and a first career goal from Nathan Isaac got the Colonials off right. They split the weekend with the highly-ranked Syracuse team thanks to two goals from Gio Palmobo and an overtime winner from Matthew Purdue to start the Colonials season 3-1.
October began some divisional play as the Colonials visited IUP and WVU and then hosted John Carroll. Though falling to the two top teams, they battled out a 1-0 victory vs the Mountaineers in which we saw Reno Patrick collect his first career shutout. The Colonials also headed east to take on Buffalo and Drexel and hosted George Mason at home. Splitting with Drexel and Buffalo helped keep the Colonials above .500 heading into November.
November started rough with a sweep coming from the Deleware Blue Hens but the team battled back the following week with their annual charity night. Having names such as Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and PO Joseph in the house may have helped light that spark as they took down a divisional rival in Kent State 5-2. The momentum kept coming as they defeated Mercyhurst 7-1 and Duquesne 7-0 before heading into Thanksgiving break. The Duquesne game featured a plethora of firsts including first goals for Travis Strutt, Braeden Martin, and Andrew Finnegan, along with the first career shutout for Goaltender Patrick Colburn. All of December featured the Colonials on the road at New York University followed by Rhode Island. Though falling short in the first three contests, they battled back to get a 6-4 victory vs Rhode Island heading into the break thanks to two big goals by Keith Reed.
January saw two new faces added to the lineup with Goaltender Harrison Fleming, a transfer from Adrian College, and Defenseman Jeremey Jenkins who made his return to the lineup after taking a hockey hiatus after the 2021-22 season. The Colonials were off to a hot start in 2024 going 4-0 with a sweep over Temple and two big wins against divisional foes in West Virginia and Kent State. An overtime winner from Michael Hurst in the WVU game proved to be one of the biggest goals all season long. February was the start of the final push to the playoffs and a big 7-4 win over Duquesne started things off right. The next three games though were hard fought but unfortunately lost in the end to Mercyhurst, John Carroll, and IUP. The Colonials would finish third in the divisional standings heading into the playoffs.
The playoffs showcased these Colonials squaring off against the number six ranked Mercyhurst Lakers who upset the Colonials just a couple weeks prior. Braeden Martin got the scoring started but the Lakers battled back. Garrett Walker netted two goals of his own to tie the game at three and sent them into overtime. Keith Reed only needed a minute and ten seconds to score to move the Colonials into the semifinals. Gio Palombo also netted his 100th point on the Reed goal. The Colonials next task was the second rank John Carroll Blue Streaks who bested them twice this season. Connor Moran got the Colonials on the board first but the Blue Streaks answered with four of their own. Keith Reed was able to net home his second of the playoffs in a comeback but it was too late as they'd fall 4-2.
A roller coaster of a season for these RMU Colonials but there is a lot to be proud of with a whole revamped roster from last season. Blake Loges, Jeremy Jenkins, Giovanni Palombo, and Tyler Draper will depart from this team after spectacular careers and leave big holes to fill for next season.
