Robert Morris University ACHA D1 Men's Hockey Dominates Mercyhurst in Annual Charity Night for Ronald McDonald House Charities
Moon Township, PA- The Robert Morris University Colonials ACHA D1 Men's Club Hockey team worked their way to an 8-1 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers on January 10th, 2025. This marks the third annual Evgeni Malkin Charity Night benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. The game was held at RMU Island Sports Center, raising funds for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Pittsburgh and Morgantown through ticket sales, jersey auctions, raffle baskets, and more. The event brought together hockey fans, players, and local celebrities for a night to give back to a well-deserving charity.
Several Pittsburgh Penguins players including Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Drew O'Connor, and P.O. Joseph were in attendance. Along with these players, the night also featured a national anthem by Pittsburgh's own Jeff Jimmerson and a Ceremonial puck-drop with RMU's president, Michelle Patrick.
RMU came fast in the first period, dominating the game and taking a 1-0 lead at the 13:53 mark.
Garrett Walker #27 made his presence known as he fired a shot into the top right corner of the Lakers net. The early goal set a highly physical tone with the Colonials continuing to pressure Mercyhurst throughout the opening period.
The second period saw RMU explode with five goals in a 6-1 advantage. Mercyhurst entered the scoring with a goal from Brendan Malloy #8 at the 17:00 minute mark, but the Colonials were quick to respond.
Braeden Martin #20 extended RMU's lead with a deflection from a point shot.
Jimmy Passanante #12 added two goals of his own. Then,
Nick Dobransky #5 scored his first career goal for RMU making it 4-1.
Michael Hurst #10 made the score 5-1 with a backhand goal into the net and Passanante finished the period off with a powerful shot to the left side with 4:18 left in the period.
In the final 20 minutes of the third period, RMU kept their foot on the gas and added two more goals making the score 8-1.
Michael Hurst registered his second of the night, firing a shot from the blue line to beat the Mercyhurst goalie.
Trevor Colberg #11 closed out the scoring with a wraparound goal beating the Lakers goalie securing the 8-1 victory for the Colonials. The game not only provided an exciting victory on ice but helped raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, supporting families in need in the Pittsburgh and Morgantown areas.
