RMU Ends Their Season With a Thrilling 6-5 Victory Over Gannon

The RMU Women's Club Soccer Team faced off against the Gannon Golden Knights to close off their season. Gannon entered the game short-handed, but RMU was courteous enough to lend them a few players of their own in order to have a fair and balanced game.

To start things off, RMU was able to keep the majority of the possession. They were able to come very close to an opening score after a dangerous cross barely missed a crashing Danielle Wood. Minutes later, the Golden Knights were able to cash in after some frantic play inside the RMU box. Maddie Byrnes was able to block away a few shots, but an unfortunate rebound led to a Gannon goal. The Colonials would look to get a goal back quickly, and they were able to do just that after a beautiful shot from about 20 yards out sailed over the Gannon keeper. The score was now tied at 1-1, with plenty of time still remaining in the first half. Both teams saw a few more opportunities in the following minutes, but RMU were the first to take advantage after Miranda Shock received a perfect through ball and slotted it past the keeper. After trailing by a goal early on, the Colonials now held a 2-1 lead. In the final seconds of the first half, Bella Buonaiuto buried a long shot that appeared almost identical to the first Colonial goal. Thanks to this late score, RMU would take a commanding 3-1 lead into the half.

The Colonials kept their foot on the gas into the second half, and their pressure paid off in the early minutes. They found the back of the net once again after Megan McClymonds sent in a perfect cross to Danielle Wood who did the rest. RMU now held a very comfortable 4-1 lead over Gannon with 37 minutes to go. The Colonials kept their amazing goal-scoring pace up, when just minutes later Miranda Shock received a pass from Rio Strosnider and snuck a beautiful shot past the Gannon keeper. The Colonial offense was clicking, and they had a 5-1 lead to show for it. The Golden Knights stayed persistent, and shortly after the recent RMU score they were able to get a goal back after a close range shot snuck past Phoenix Cannon. The score was now 5-2 after 3 goals combined from both teams to open the second half. The scoring slowed down in the next twenty minutes, with neither team being able to find a good opportunity. At around the fifteen minute mark, the Golden Knights sent a nice-looking shot up and over the RMU goalie and it found its way into the net. Gannon now cut the lead to 5-3, but time was ticking. The Golden Knights really made things interesting when they buried a long shot from about to 20-yard line to now cut the score to 5-4. With 13 minutes remaining, Gannon only needed one goal to tie this one up after trailing by as many as four goals. Disaster struck at the 9 minute mark when a Gannon forward sprinted past the RMU defense and scored the equalizing goal. The Colonials seemingly had no answers for the Golden Knights late in the second half as they let them crawl back into the game and tie it at 5-5. The final minutes were very tense, with each team looking to grab a victory. Danielle Wood wouldn't let the Colonials come out of this one with a loss, though, and she scored a heroic goal to put RMU back in front with just minutes remaining. Gannon tried their hardest to tie the game back up, but they fell short and RMU would win this game 6-5. After a late scare, the Colonials were able to remain calm and grab a victory to end their season off.
