Senior Co-Captains for the RMU Club Soccer team, Megan McClymonds and Sarah Bacha, discuss their academic experience at RMU, their love for the game, and the impactfulness of their partnership.

Megan, Statics and Data Science major from Butler PA, and Sarah, Nursing major from York PA, both agree that RMU was the perfect fit for them to thrive both academically and athletically. The soccer stars describe their appreciation for quality time with professors and classmates as it has allowed them to truly grow. McClymonds and Bacha even quote the RMU motto, stating that RMU truly is big enough to matter and small enough to care.

When it comes to their upbringing in soccer, McClymonds started at the age of 4-years-old and continued from there, eventually stopping her senior year of high school after tearing her ACL. Bacha also started at 4-years-old as she enjoyed playing with her sister and soon after, her parents got her enrolled in soccer. The co-captains both credit their success to their moms as they've helped the girls work through challenges and have encouraged them to not sweat the small stuff. However, Bacha also credits a lot of her success to her sister who she thinks the world of as she has been there and helped her with everything along the way.

Both of the girls hit a bit of a stalemate later in their soccer careers. While McClymonds tore her ACL, Bacha had switched to lacrosse for a period of time. However, once they came to RMU, they both had a calling to get back into their favorite sport and the opportunity could not have presented itself any better after hearing about the club soccer team.

Over the course of playing this intensive yet rewarding sport, the athletes have experienced challenges, lessons, and everything in between. And as co-captains, the girls see eye to eye on a lot of the topics. For starters, they both agree that one of the toughest things is comparing themselves to other, bigger schools and soccer teams. They feel as though they are able to recruit fairly well and put emphasis on the fact that their RMU team means everything to them, however the struggle of comparison is always there. Bacha states, "You need to be confident in your ability and not compare yourself to others. Their ability doesn't take away from our ability".

In regard to what soccer has taught them, McClymonds explains that communication and collaboration are the two most impactful things. She describes, "Talking to others is a vital skill to have and has helped academically. Being able to tell people things effectively, in soccer you are constantly communicating with people from all walks of life, so it's important to know how to do so with others". Bacha states that being able to work as an individual but also within a group is extremely important seeing as how there are a lot of moving parts. She explains that you learn how to anticipate, build each other's skills, and hold your own for your sake and for the teams'. And the girls both agree that with team sports, there is value in holding yourself to a higher standard, knowing that you always have each other's backs. Each and every person matters, McClymonds and Bacha insist. And if you're having a bad day, your team will be there for you and pick up the pieces.

When the girls aren't playing soccer, they are spending time with friends, soaking up every minute of college, or hanging out on their purple couch with their dog, Molly. And if they had anything else to add it would be if you have any interest in playing soccer, join! There are no requirements; they simply want to build the program and see others having fun. It allows you to build relationships and see familiar faces around campus. Megan and Sarah would like to credit the quality of their soccer experience to each other as they have been with one another from the very start. Together, they have grown and hope to see other girls do the same.
