2023 Club Sports Celebration

RMU Club Sports get together for some food, games, and awards

Last week, RMU Club Sports had their 2nd annual Club Sports Celebration in which there was food, games, and awards for the members of the RMU Club Sport community. Check out the gallery at the bottom of the article, and these are the award winners from the event. 

Award Recipient Bios 

Male Scholar Athlete of the Year: Colin Gorini, Men's Club Soccer
Finalists: Crawford Bosack (D4 CHE), Elijah Cross (M. Basketball), Colin Gorini (M. Soccer), Gage Handwork (M. Volleyball), Jesse McCullough (Esports), Parker Rutherford (ACHA D1 and T2RH) 

The senior applied mathematics major from Montoursville, PA put together a very strong season this year helping lead the Men's Club Soccer team. The midfielder was all over the pitch, and chipped in a couple goals as well including his game winning penalty kick goal to lift RMU over IUP in the teams home opener. He also helped with the campus rec department's social media this year and worked at the rec center as a member of the front desk staff. On top of that he has an astounding 3.87 GPA

Female Scholar Athlete of the Year: Sydney Spuzzillo, Women's D2 ACHA Hockey and Tier II Roller Hockey
Finalists: Sarah Bacha (W. Soccer), McKenna Longoria (Golf), Grace Marian (Esports), Amara Marrese (W2 ACHA), Paige Matey (W. Volleyball), Sydney Spuzzillo (W2 ACHA and T2RH)

The senior Sport Management major from North Royalton, Ohio has contributed a ton to both the club hockey and roller hockey program over her time at RMU. She was a defender both years of Tier II Roller Hockey's back to back championships, and she was the alternate captain for the brand new Women's D2 ACHA team this year as its lone senior and recorded 8 points in 16 games. She also worked as a game day ops manager for the Men's D1, D3, and D4 club hockey teams. On top of all of that, she will be graduating RMU with an impressive 3.72 GPA

Coach of the Year: Ryan Fuchs, Men's D4 CHE Hockey
Finalists: CJ Bakaj (Esports), Ryan Fuchs (D4 CHE), Chuck Kuzniewski (Golf), Angela Smarto (W. Rugby)

Known to his players as Bubs, Coach Fuchs had his 2nd season as the head coach of Men's D4 CHE team and 5th season of coaching club hockey at RMU. He turned in an unforgettable performance. After the team got its first ever victory last season, the team finished 8-5 this year and topped it off with a CHE championship win over PennWest Cal. Coach Fuchs got his undergrad and graduate degrees from RMU, with his undergrad coming in 2016 in Communications, and a Masters in 2017 in Organizational Leadership.

Teams of Year: Men's Club Basketball and Men's Club Soccer
Finalists: D4 CHE, Esports, Men's Club Basketball, Men's Club Soccer, W. Volleyball, T2RH

Men's Club Basketball is one half of Club Sports' teams of the year this year with their incredible regular season. The team went 14-2 this season, defeating opponents with much larger undergraduate populations including the likes of Pitt, Wright State, and Dayton. They spent over 3 months of the season Nationally ranked inside the NCBBA Top 20. 

Men's Club Soccer is the other half of the Club Sport teams of the year. Their growth on the pitch, their social media presence, their growth in membership, and their support in the voting form all contribute to them co-winning this team of the year award. 

Rising Star Team of the Year: D4 Men's CHE Hockey
Finalists: D4 CHE, Men's Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, W2 ACHA, W. Bowling

The D4 CHE Hockey team has taken major strides over the past couple of years, and it culminated with a championship victory this season. The team had a full roster for the first time ever, won a program record number of games, and claimed its first ever championship. With all that positive moment, it's clear that the team is the choice for the Rising Star Team Award.
