Tier II Roller Hockey Wins 5th in a Row

2/14/2020 8:32:00 AM

Coraopolis, PA- Robert Morris defeated Carnegie Mellon by a score of 4-2 on Wednesday night to push their winning streak to five games. RMU now sits in second place in their division with a record of 7-4-1 and CMU drops to third with a 7-5-0 record following the game. The team is undefeated in 2020 and has not lost a game since November 6th, 2019.

Both teams entered the game on a winning streak, and both teams spent much of the first period trying to find the opening goal. The majority of the period went by before RMU's Tucker McKee took a pass from Alex Savisky and rifled a shot that went bardown to the back of the net. The Colonials took the 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, CMU would get one in the back of the net to tie the game up at one-a-piece after the first.

The second period would only see one goal, and it came off an RMU power play opportunity. Tyler Savisky buried a shot past the CMU goaltender on the powerplay and the Colonials were back on top 2-1 (assisted by Ethan Grant). While there was no more goals scored in the 2nd, the chances were there. Both teams had long stretches of time in the offensive zone, but neither team could find another one before the intermission.

In the third period, Alex Savisky began to open up the Colonial lead. He worked his way into the slot and ripped a slapshot with less than 10 feet between him and the netminder. The puck flew past the netminder for the 3-1 RMU lead. The Colonials controlled more of the third period and Ethan Grant would add the final goal for RMU to make it 4-1. However, with 4:30 remaining, CMU would sneak one five-hole past Hazenstab to pull within 2. Despite calling their timeout, pulling their goalie, and having the overwhelming majority of puck possession in the final minutes CMU would not find another goal.

In the end, goaltender Tyler Hazenstab looked sharp all night, and his 2.0 GAA through the last two games would help lead RMU to their 5th win in a row. RMU would defeat CMU by a score of 4-2 and take second place away from CMU in the division. RMU will once again play an opponent next week with revenge in mind as they take on first place Duquesne DeJames, the team who spoiled RMU's 3-0 lead back in October. Their matchup will be Wednesday, February 19th at 10:30 at the RMU Island Sports Center.
