Moon, PA- Robert Morris University have hired Richard Zapp as to serve as the inaugural head coach of the Robert Morris University Esports Team. This hiring signifies the next major step Robert Morris is taking into the competitive Esport scene. Professionally, Zapp has a background in Higher Education and College Counseling through Slippery Rock University. Over the past three years, he has worked primarily as a career coach supporting students in their personal development. Don't let his background fool you into questioning his Esport capabilities though. On the competitive scene, Richard has had success across multiple trading card games over the last 15 years, ranking within top 10 of multiple games across multiple seasons of competition. That success propelled him to collaborate with close friends to develop a professional coaching platform in which up and coming players donate funds to support them in regular mentorship, coaching, and content production. Between his success as a competitor, coach, and mentor he was a prime candidate for the newly formed position.

The hiring of Richard Zapp is the latest addition in what has turned into quite the summer for Esport athletes at Robert Morris. Over the course of the summer, a brand new (and visually stunning) Esport center was designed, built, and opened. New gaming desks, chairs, computers, and peripherals were installed in the space. For the members of the various Esport Teams, the new dedicated room was a exciting commitment from the university to their program. A brand new facility called for expansion of the team and a proper coach to take command and lead the squads. The program is officially competing in 7 titles this season. Those titles are League of Legends, Rocket League, Hearthstone, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros., and Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The Esport program is also now a member of NACE, the National Association of Collegiate Esports. Zapp will be in charge of helping organize the tournament and match schedules for each team, as well as providing coaching and helping the team produce content.

Yet its more than just the games played for Richard. "For most people successful in the industry, it's not just about playing well, but producing informative and entertaining content." he remarked. He also has a drive to create an inclusive and winning culture for each of RMU's Esport teams. This was highlighted in his response explaining what makes him unique as an Esports coach. Zapp explained, "Very, very few Esports professionals have the academic backgrounds in counseling or higher education that I do - and it will give Robert Morris University an edge when it comes to growing and developing the program. My counseling background has also led into how I approach counseling, and my deep understanding in topics such as mindset, how to efficiently reflect upon footage, and proper training regimens will bring a lot to our players". Richard's ability to communicate his vision with the players is what's going to set him apart as a coach.  Anyone could learn the intricacies of a game, but communicating strategies and bring out the best in each of the players is a skill not everyone has. Richard brings those qualities in spades.

Coach Zapp has clear goals for the program this season. Regarding expectations for this season, "I am enthusiastic to create the infrastructure of the program - it's rare to be able to have an opportunity to help a program develop from the ground up. Working with the students have clearly shown me they are ready to create not only a culture of success, but one of inclusion, growth, and fun". Not to get ahead of himself, but he's got a goal for the long term as well. That being "My goal is to make Robert Morris University have the most successful Esports division in Western Pennsylvania. Through the support of faculty, engagement of students, and the focus of the recreation department, I am confident we will meet and exceed the expectations set forth in this year and the years to follow".
