RMU CoD Starts 2021 at 2-0

Defeat High Point and Bowling Green on Opening Night

2/9/2021 12:16:00 PM

Moon, PA- The Collegiate CoD League kicked off last week, and the Colonials opened up their season with matches against High Point White and Bowling Green. Both games took place Tuesday night, one right after the other. For a team that struggled for wins last year, the team looked for a stronger start to 2021.

This year's squad entered the season with a lot of optimism. This year's game is played in a 4v4 style, so the roster size decreased from last year's 5v5 roster. Returning members senior AJ Lassick (Cryon) and junior Preston Bazala (Caes) co-captain this year's squad. The starting roster is rounded out by talented newcomers 5th year Chris Gediohn (MeDonky) and freshman Max Mussitsch (YaBoyPug). They opened their season against High Point.

The Colonials dominated the opening Hardpoint match on Checkmate, winning by a score of 250-49. RMU showed that their preseason scrims were put to good use as they rotated exceptionally well all match. Not to mention the team looked impressive in a 1v1 situation, with each team member averaging over a 2.0 K/D. MeDonky in particular was locked in, recording 23 eliminations and only 3 deaths in his CCL debut, a K/D of 7.67.

RMU then handily won Game 2, an S&D match on Garrison. The Colonials took the best of 11 series by a score of 6-1. Co-captains Caes and Cryon both looked sharp this round. Caes went 10-1 for a 10.0 K/D, and Cryon went 9-1 for a 9.0 K/D. The final game of the match was on Garrison once again for Control. RMU swept the Control series 3-0, which clinched a 3-0 match sweep over High Point White. YaBoyPug did the heavy lifting in that series, going 14-2 (7.0 K/D).

Bowling Green would pose a far tougher challenge for Robert Morris. The Colonials looked to carry the momentum they had built from the opening match of the night, and were able to do so at first. RMU won the opening match (Raid Hardpoint) by a score of 250-216. They followed that up with a game win on Checkmate S&D, taking the best of 11 series 6-3. On the verge of their second straight match sweep, Bowling Green began showing why the Colonials lost to them the year prior.

In a back and forth Control series on Raid, the Colonials dropped their first gamemode of the season with a 3-2 loss in the best of 5. The Colonials still lead the overall match series 2-1 entering a second hardpoint match. The Checkmate hardpoint did not go the way it had gone against High Point, and RMU dropped the match 250-207. The overall match series was now tied 2-2, with a decisive Game 5 to come.

The final game was Raid S&D, and kept fans on the edge of their seat throughout. RMU led early, but the lead would not hold for long. A critical 1v2 round win from Caes kept the series going, and in the 11th and final game of the round, Cryon sealed the win for the team. RMU won the match 3-2, and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Their next matches are this week against Shawnee State Gray and the University of Akron.
