RMU Roller Hockey Qualifies For Nationals

3/27/2025 2:24:00 PM

The Robert Morris Colonials Roller Hockey Team is going to the NCRHA (National College Roller Hockey Association) National Championships for the fourth straight season and ninth time in program history. This year's tournament will be held in Fort Myers, Florida, at The Skatium Arena from April 2 to 5. The Colonials are one of 13 teams across the country to clinch a bid in the division two pool.

Last season the Colonials made their second consecutive Final Four run but ultimately fell short of a national championship. The team had big shoes to fill upon the graduation of team captain Jarrett Tomazich. Head Coach Derek Carlins got some fresh reinforcements in Enrique Marte, Chase MacDougall, and Joseph Pascucci over the offseason as well as adding a pair of d1 club ice hockey players in Anthony Chiaramonte and Garrett Walker to play alongside teammate Alejandro Apud.

The season started off rough for the Colonials as the first tournament held in Grove City saw RMU find one lone win versus Henry Ford. The Colonials would have one final tournament in Broomall, PA where they would ultimately get swept. Goaltender Ben Korol was on his game regardless of what the scoresheet may say, a big reason why RMU stayed in most of these contests. The team also saw senior defenseman Cameron Brickett make massive strides in the absence of other players.

The flip of the calendar year saw the Colonials get some new additions to the roster as Tyler Weekley joined the forward crew for the Columbus tournament. As the ice season came to a close, key pieces of the roster such as Matthew Purdue and Luke Zukowski were able to rejoin the team. Through another sweep, the Colonials began to find their groove and what better way to build on that than adding Giovanni Palombo back into the lineup. RMU would win 3 of the next 4 contests in New York including a win over the ECRHA champion Slippery Rock squad after a massive goal by star forward Tanner Foley. Palombo, Foley, Purdue, and Korol all earned all-star nominations on behalf of the Colonials.

RMU then turned their attention to the ECRHA playoffs where they needed a pair of wins to secure their bid to the National Championship. The first matchup saw the Colonials fall to Northeastern 4-1 and now were on the verge of elimination. The team battled Boston and came out on top thanks to a Korol 25-save performance and a Weekley power play game-winner. The Colonials turned to Farmingdale in an early morning matchup where they came out with a decisive 12-7 victory. Palombo tallied 4 goals and 8 points while Chiramonte collected his first career roller hat trick. RMU moved on in a revenge matchup vs Northeastern. The Huskies tallied the first goal of the game but it would be the last Korol would allow. RMU would respond with goals by Chiaramonte and Purdue to move them on to the next round. For a chance to play in the ECRHA championship, they had to take on Neumann. This being RMU's third game of the day, the Neumann squad took advantage and defeated RMU 5-2.

The Colonials did more than enough to reach the National Championship thanks to some late-season heroics. RMU has been placed into Pool C for the round-robin portion of the tournament alongside Endicott, Quinnipiac, Farmingdale, and Cal Poly. The schedule for those games is as follows:

4/2 at Farmingdale 10:00

4/2 vs Endicott 3:30

4/3 at Quinnipiac 12:15

4/3 vs Cal Poly 5:30

The rest of the schedule will be determined as the tournament progresses but stay tuned to RMU Club Sports' social media Instagram and website for live updates from Ft. Myers.
