RMU D4 Hockey Weekend Recap

RMU 5-2 Victory Against the CMU Tartans

Moon Township, PA- The RMU ACHA D4 hockey team came out on top against Carnegie Mellon University with a thrilling 5-2 victory. On Friday, January 17, at the RMU Island Sports Center, the Colonials played their first game of the new year. It was a competitive game as the Colonials pushed forward showing resilience and skill to maintain their lead throughout the game. 

The action kicked off in the first period with a goal at 19:28 by RMU's #27 Carter Bossong. Finding the back of the net, the Colonials took a quick 1-0 lead. Carnegie Mellon answered back in the second period, tying the game at 10:13. 

RMU kept the pressure on and at 11:46, #10- Elijah Zeis-Miller gave the Colonials a 2-1 lead. Less than eight minutes later, RMU had an advantage of 3-1 as #24 Ryan Riffner scored at the 3:43 mark. Carnegie Mellon was not ready to give up and fought back in the third period. The Tartans scored at 8:55 but RMU refused to relinquish their lead. With 4:20 remaining, #23 Billy Shaver gave the Colonials a 4-2 lead. CMU pulled their goalie in their last-minute chance to different the score. Shaver sealed the deal with an empty net at 1:34 ensuring a 5-2 RMU victory over the Tartans. 

The Colonials showed a strong performance with contributions across the whole team and a strong defensive effort. With the victory, the D4 hockey team continues to build momentum and looks to carry this energy in their upcoming match-ups. 

RMU D4 Hockey Battles Hard but Falls Short Against Penn State Altoona

Altoona, PA- After a dominant 5-2 win at home the night before, the D4 club hockey team faced a tough challenge on Saturday, January 18th as they traveled to Galactic Ice Arena to take on Penn State Altoona. Despite the hard-fought game, the Colonials fell short to a 3-2 score. 

The game started fast with Penn State string first making it 1-0 at the 15:52 mark. However, RMU was quick to respond at 7:58, #24 Ryan Riffner found the back of the net making it 1-1. As the game continued, RMU continued to attack. In the second period, the Colonials took their first lead of the game at 16:28 when #12 Nathaniel Barr scored, putting RMU up 2-1. However, Penn State Altoona fought back hard answering two goals of their own. The first at 5:57 tying the game 2-2 then again at 2:21, giving the Nittany Lions a 302 lead as the team goes into the third period. 

In the final period of the game, there was no scoring, but the physical intensity increased significantly with multiple scrums and confrontations in front of both goaltenders, sending many players from each side to the penalty box. RMU's defense and goaltender #1 James Capell stood strong throughout the period, fighting to clear the puck and protect the crease from the aggressive Penn State forwards. Despite their effort to tie the game, RMU couldn't find the equalizing goal and ended the game with Penn State Altoona taking a 3-2 win. 

The Colonials didn't get the result they were hoping for, but they showed heart and resilience, especially through their physical battles throughout the game. The RMU Colonials will look to regroup and build on this loss as they continue through the season.

Rhode Island Tops RMU in Tight ACHA D1 Showdown, 3-2

Saturday, January 18, 2025 – URI Boss Arena

In an ACHA D1 hockey match up, the University of Rhode Island managed to hold off the Robert Morris University Colonials, securing a 3-2 victory at the URI Boss Arena on Saturday afternoon. 

The game started fast in the first period, with the University of Rhode Island taking advantage of an early powerplay and at 8:56 taking a 1-0 lead. Despite the aggressive play, RMU struggled to generate their offense finishing the period off with 5 shots on goal, while Rhode Island kept the RMU goaltender busy with 25 shots. 

In the second period, RMU battled back to tie the game at 15:07. #10 Michael Hurst stepped up for the Colonials, walked into the slot, and snapped a powerful shot past the Rhode Island goaltender making it 1-1. However, Rhode Island responded, scoring with 8:56 left in the period to regain a 2-1 lead. RMU managed 18 shots in the period and Rhode Island had 43 shots. 

In the third period, RMU fought to make a difference in the scoring. At 9:27, #10 Michael Hurst scored again, this time with a backhand shot top left of the Rhode Island goaltender making the game 2-2. With the scores tied and momentum shifting, both teams fought fiercely. However, Rhode Island found the breakthrough, scoring with 3:01 left in the third period and securing a 3-2 lead. RMU fought hard but was unable to find the equalizer. The game concluded a 3-2 win for the University of Rhode Island as the Colonials finished the game with 29 shots and Rhode Island 64 shots. 

Despite the loss, RMU fought hard and the defense showed resilience, but the overwhelming offensive play by Rhode Island brought them the win. RMU prepares to regroup for their next game.

RMU ACHA D3 Hockey Dominates University of Akron in 8-2 Victory

Center Ice Sports Complex, Akron Ohio- The Robert Morris University ACHA D3 hockey team dominated against the University of Akron Ohio, securing an 8-2 victory on January 18th at Center Ice Sports Complex. The first period set the tone for the night, as RMU jumped to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period. The scoring was opened by #2 Joey Laquatra, followed by goals from #17 John Betz, #13 Wade Daniels, and #24 Gavin Crivelli. Akron was unable to get anything going with RMU's defense standing strong. 

In the second period, RMU continued to extend their lead with three more goals. Betz scored his second of the game followed by a one-goal from Akron to bring the score to 5-1. However, RMU responded quickly to the goal by Akron with goals from #21 Zachary Bevins and #23 Adam Sciorilli to push the score 7-1 heading into the final period. 

In the third period, #17 John Betz completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game. Akron managed another goal, but it wasn't enough to come back, as the game ended in a final score of 8-2 Colonials. 

With contributions from the whole RMU team, the victory solidifies the team's momentum as they continue into their next game, continuing their pursuit of a strong finish to the season.
