Derek Carlins: From RMU Roller Hockey Coach to Penguins Training Camp Referee
For Derek Carlins, stepping onto the ice as a referee at the Pittsburgh Penguins training camp felt nothing short of surreal. A journey that began 25 years ago has taken him from his roots as a player and coach, to refereeing games with some of the top talent in the NHL.

Carlins first picked up the whistle as a way to spend more time on the ice and earn extra income. Little did he know that his decision would profoundly shape his hockey career. "It's changed my hockey path for the better," Carlins shared, reflecting on his years of officiating. Over the past two decades, his experience has taken him across the country, from the rinks of Texas to iconic hockey barns, overseeing games at all levels of competition.
Refereeing the Penguins' training camp isn't Carlins' first experience with NHL players, but it still evokes a sense of awe. "Being on the ice with NHL players is surreal," he said. While he's been around many of these athletes before as a referee, the opportunity to interact with them up close remains a highlight. "The coolest part is being able to talk to them during the game," he added.

While this wasn't his first NHL camp, he had previously worked at the Wheeling Nailers' training camp, it still felt special. During this year's Penguins camp, Carlins found himself talking with forward Drew O'Connor about offsides and icing calls, blending casual conversation with the duties of officiating.
Of course, hockey players never shy away from banter, and Carlins had his fair share of chirping from the bench.
"Before the game, the coaches told me, 'Anything close, keep it moving,'" he stated. The players joked with him for not making calls, a reminder that even in the professional setting, camaraderie and fun remain a huge part of the game.
When it comes to his favorite moments as a referee, Carlins points to his time officiating in college games and the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He has worked in the NAHL that took him to Texas, where he reffed in some old barns. "It was a different style of hockey—more physical," he remembers. He also remembers refereeing college club team games, including double overtime battles at nationals along with other games that featured future NHL stars.
As for the future, Carlins is eager for more. "I'm excited for what's to come as they keep coming," he says, looking forward to more opportunities to stay on the ice, working with top-tier talent, and enjoying the unique perspective that officiating provides. For Coach Carlins whose path has been reshaped by his officiating career, the best moments may still be ahead.
