Co-ed Roller Hockey Advances to League Finals

Undefeated in the Regular Season, the Colonials look to seal the deal this week

3/29/2022 2:40:00 PM

The Robert Morris Colonials Tier II Roller Hockey Team capped off their historic regular season with a perfect 8-0-0 record. Before this spring, the Colonials had last played in February of 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the end of the regular season as well as the playoffs. The players were devastated that their season was over after finishing on a 7-game winning streak. As the pandemic continued, the entire 2020-2021 season was canceled and nobody knew when or if the Western Pennsylvania College Roller Hockey League (WPACRHL) would return.

In the Fall of 2021, it was announced that an abbreviated season would take place during the Spring of 2022. Only 4 teams returned including Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Penn State Beaver, and your Robert Morris Colonials. In a typical season, one would also see the likes of CCAC, Slippery Rock University, Clarion University, and several other colleges. However, with the abbreviated season, the league had to manage who they could get on a short notice.

This Colonials team featured several new faces including skaters Caleb Morgan, Tyler Weekley, Shane Yobbi, Parker Rutherford, Sydney Spuzzillo, and goaltenders Jeffrey Fyola and Cullen Chestnut. Returning for the Colonials were Ross LoCastro, Ethan Grant, Alex Savisky, Phillip Bacinski, Michael Hays, and their new captain, Sean Mullen.

The Colonials received contributions from everyone in their lineup. Their leading scorer, Parker Rutherford, finished the regular season with a whopping 26 points (20G, 6A). Shane Yobbi was right behind him with 23 points (12G, 11A). Both starting and backup goaltenders split games with starter Jeffrey Fyola picking up 4 wins, backup Cullen Chestnut with 3 wins, and defenseman Ethan Grant coming in on an emergency basis with 1 win. Below you can find the final stats from your Colonials:

After defeating the CMU Tartans 2 games to 0 in round 1, The Colonials head into the finals as they take on the Duquesne Dukes in a best-of-3 series. The Colonials will find themselves in a peculiar situation for these finals as graduate student Nicolas Patnella will roll into the crease for RMU and try to help backstop the Colonials to a league title. Game 1 of the series will be Wednesday 3/30 at 10:30pm down at the Island Sports Center.
