D1 Hockey Now 3-0!

3/12/2021 9:53:00 AM

The Colonials have been on a roll to open their 2021 campaign, as they now sit 3-0 following wins on Sunday and Tuesday. On Sunday, the team traveled to Buffalo for the second half of their home and home series against Canisius. The Colonials walked away with a 4-1 victory. Then on Tuesday, RMU travelled west to face Ohio University. The Colonials defeated the Bobcats 6-2 to improve to 3-0.

Robert Morris 4, Canisius 1

The Colonials opened the scoring midway through the first, with Joseph Zottola scoring the game's opening goal assisted by Noah Raymundo and Braeden Harbison. With less than two minutes left in the period, Steven Ralston broke the game wide open with a pair of goals only 31 seconds apart, with Nathan Mickey drawing assists on both. The Colonials entered the intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Canisius would score their lone goal early in the third period, but that would be the only time something would get past goaltender Parker Rutherford. He stopped 32 of 33 shots in RMU's win. Steven Ralston would record a third goal for the hat trick with just over two minutes to play. The game saw its fair share of penalties once again, with RMU going to the power play seven times and Canisius getting five opportunities with the man advantage.

Robert Morris 6, Ohio 2

In this rare Tuesday night contest, Ohio would score the opening and closing goal of the game. The Colonials would score the six in the middle. The Bobcats scored early into the first and held that lead for most of the first period. However, the Colonials would head to the power play late in the period. Nathan Mickey set it up and Steven Ralston fired it home to tie the game heading to intermission.

The second period was all Robert Morris on the scoreboard. The Colonials got their second power play goal of the night when Andrew Hachmeister (assisted by Zottola) netted the puck to give RMU a 2-1 lead. A lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Trevor Kleckner would score his first of the season a few minutes later, assisted by Tyler Kovac. And the Colonials final goal of the period saw Joseph Zottola score to give RMU a 4-1 advantage after two.

Despite the three goal lead, RMU had a couple power play chances early in the third and capitalized on it to extend it further. Defenseman Noah Raymundo scored his first of the season with his power play marker assisted by Matthew Butson and Tyler Draper. The Colonials final goal of the evening would be from who started it, as Steven Ralston's hot hand continued for his 2nd of the game and 5th in the past two games. Ohio would add one more late goal, but it would not be enough as goaltender Kevin Mackey stopped 34 of 36 shots on the day.
