D4 Club Hockey Scores First Ever Win

Two Hat Tricks and Strong Goaltending Lead to D4's First Ever Win

11/23/2021 10:37:00 AM

Moon, PA- The D4 Club Hockey team achieved history on Sunday night, winning their first game in program history. Hosting Saint Vincent College for their home opener this season, the Colonials won 6-3 thanks to an all around team effort on defense and a couple of highlight reel performances on offense.

If the game was to be judged solely on who had the puck longer and who took more shots, it would have easily fallen in favor of SVC. The Bearcats outshot the Colonials 42-20 and held the majority of possession. But RMU's defense did a really good job of limiting the high danger chances and keeping most shots either wide to the outside or from a distance.

RMU would be the first to score in the game thanks to a stellar play from Crawford Bosack. The sophomore intercepted a pass between SVC defensemen in the Bearcats zone. He controlled the puck while flying down the ice and then roofed the shot top corner past the netminder to give RMU the lead. That goal would stand as the only one in the first period. Despite being outshot 12-3 in the first, RMU led 1-0.

Just over two minutes into the second period, SVC would tie it up on a 2 on 2 rush when a shot went off the post and in. RMU would go on a five minute power play in the middle of the period and they would capitalize on it to take a 2-1 lead. Nathaniel Barr would toss a bad angle shot on net and it got lost in a crowd in front of the net. Eli Weiland found it first, a tapped in before the goalie could find it to give RMU the lead. SVC would score a minute later with a shorthanded goal off a turnover in the neutral zone. The final goal of the period would be an RMU one, as Weiland got his second of the period by putting home a tough angle shot up over the shoulder as RMU entered the intermission up 3-2.

In the final period, the story was Saint Vincent constantly being in the penalty box. Bosack took advantage of one of those power plays to make it 4-2 when he fired a shot from the high slot that found its way to the back of the net. Bosack completed his hat trick with a nice play on a 4v4 opportunity when he dangled past the SVC defender and tucked the puck in past the goalie to make it 5-2. SVC would respond quickly to make it 5-3 but an empty net goal from Eli Weiland not only secured a hat trick for himself as well, but closed out the game as RMU took it 6-3.

Starting goalie Nick Guimond also deserves a special shoutout for stopping 39 of 42 shots, and making some spectacular saves along the way. Especially in the third period when he not only stopped a breakaway chance but also stopped a couple of point blank chances from the slot. The team thanked the fans once the game ended and got a picture afterwards to celebrate the programs first win.

The D4 Club Hockey team will be in action next at Allegheny College on December 4th.
