Moon, PA- The D3 Club Hockey team had the offense rolling once again in the weekend games against Penn State Altoona and California University of Pennsylvania. For one game, it was more than plenty to pick up the goal. For the other, it was enough to get a point in the standings but not enough to win the game. It was a strong weekend after a stretch of tough games recently.
RMU defeats PSU Altoona 7-0
It was a quiet first period for both squads. No goals or penalties were registered in the first period of the game, and both teams went to intermission tied 0-0. For RMU, their 0 on the scoreboard was about to change. For PSU Altoona, Colonials netminder
Robert Petrelli kept them at 0 all game. The 25 save shutout was his first of the season.
6:10 into the second period is when the scoreless tie was finally broken as
Joseph Petti scored to make it 1-0 RMU. RMU forward
Luke Cirlingione also scored in the second period as the Colonials took a 2-0 lead to the final period of play. It was there RMU offensive broke the game open.
It only took 40 seconds after the opening faceoff of the 3rd period for RMU to make it 3-0, with the puck coming off the stick of
Blake Loges. Through the midway point of the period, RMU scored 3 times in 61 seconds to put the game away.
Brian Baker started with a powerplay goal to make it 4-0 RMU.
Norman Riffner scored soon after, and Cirlingione got his second of the night to make it 6-0 with nine and a half to play. A late powerplay goal from
Nolan Puhula would be the last goal of the game. In addition to scoring a goal, Jospeh Petti picked up 3 assists for a 4 point night. Puhula added 2 assists to his goal for a 3 point performance.
RMU loses in OT 6-5 to Cal U
The Vulcans took the early lead on their home ice, but the visting Colonials would anwer back before the period was over. Trailing 1-0, Petti found a loose puck and launched it low glove side to tie the game. With a little over two minutes to go,
Quinn Gilbert tuck himself by the backdoor and pounced on a cross crease pass to give RMU a 2-1 advantage. RMU would take the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Cal U scored midway through the second to tie the game at 2-2. A point blast found its way home later in the period for the Vulcans as well and they entered the break with the 3-2 lead. Robert Morris would need to bounce back in the 3rd, and they did.
Blake Loges drilled a slapshot through traffic in front that found the back of the net, and RMU tied the game 3-3 with 15:15 to play. Cal U would retake the lead with 11 to play and for the third time in the game RMU would have to recover from the 1 goal deficit. They did so with 4:25 to go as a slap pass fooled the Cal U goaltender, and RMU buried it to make it 4-4. A broken 2-1 rush resulted in a goal for RMU to give the Colonials a 5-4 lead with 2 minutes left. However, a goal against with 58 seconds to go and an overtime goal later, RMU would leave with a point but not the victory.
