Rocket League Blue Goes 6-3 in 2020 NACE Fall Cup

Defeat both of the Group's top teams, missing playoffs on tiebreaker

Moon, PA- While the majority of sports have not had competition in the fall, the RMU Esports team has been an exception. Due to the already virtual nature of their competitions, the Esports team continues to compete against other schools around the country. Rocket League Blue recently wrapped up their regular season in the NACE Rocket League Fall Cup.

The team finished the nine game schedule with a record of 6-3, putting them tied for 3rd out of ten schools in Group K. Their six wins included wins over both teams tied for 1st, Lackawanna College and Montgomery County Community College. However, they failed to qualify for the playoffs which will be explained later in the article.

The season began on the wrong foot with a loss to Eastern University, a team who would ultimately finish 3-6. RMU would bounce back with a much needed victory over Lebanon Valley College (5-4), winning the Best of 5 series 3-2. Sitting at 1-1, the Colonials made it 2-1 with one of their most impressive wins of the season with their victory over Montgomery County Community College.

RMU would take another 3-2 win in the match over MCCC, to improve to 2-1. One of the highlights of that match was this risky fake pass attempt by Rep: https://clips.twitch.tv/ElegantHyperMonkeyPMSTwin . It was a bold move but ultimately the right one as SkiPi buried it for the go-ahead goal. That momentum continued into the 4th game of the season, a 3-0 victory over Point Park to improve to 3-1.

The team stumbled through the midseason though, with back to back losses against Arcadia Scarlet and Juanita, the team fell to 3-3. Sitting at .500 with over half of the season completed is not where the team wanted to be, and they rallied from there.

They got back on track with a big win over Lackawanna College in the Best of 5 3-2, improving to 4-3 overall. A couple highlights from that game can be found here: https://clips.twitch.tv/MoralTardySashimiYouDontSay

The team would end the season on a three game winning streak, picking up 3-0 victories over Penn State B and Messiah. These wins elevated the team to 6-3 in Group play, and awaited the verdict on their playoff hopes.

Unfortunately for RMU, the playoff structure did not work out in their favor. The top 2 seeds from each group would advance, and all of the 3rd seeds would enter a play in round. The top four 4th seeds would also make it to the qualifying round. Despite being tied for 3rd in their group at 6-3, the official site slated them in at 4th in the group. Their group only played 9 games compared to the majority of other groups' 10 games. Since RMU had less wins then a number of other 4th seeds who sat at 7-3, the Colonials will not be participating in the NACE playoffs.

The Rocket League team will be continuing competition though, as now they are participating in their Collegiate Star League season. They currently sit 2-1 through three games of the season. They sandwiched a 3-2 loss to the University of Pennsylvania with a 3-1 win over Becker College and a 3-0 win over the University of Rochester.
