D1 Hockey Splits Weekend: Win over WVU, Loss to Niagara

Moon, PA- The DI Ice Hockey team split the weekend, but arguably won the more important game. The team played host to West Virginia University on Friday night and Niagara on Saturday. The game against WVU was a critical game here early in the season, as the Mountaineers are a conference opponent. The Colonials took care of business against their conference foe with a 4-3 victory. Against nonconference opponent Niagara, the team lost 6-5. This marks the team's first regulation loss of the season, now sitting at 3-1-1 through 5 games.

Game 1: RMU defeats WVU 4-3 

The Colonials came out strong in the first period and generated some high quality scoring chances. Freshman Tyler Draper buried a shot past the goalie to give Robert Morris the 1-0 lead with around 13 to play in the first period. Joshua Brantner and Andrew Hachmeister with the assists. While on the power play, Joseph Zottola doubled up the Colonials lead with a goal late in the first to make it 2-0. Nathan Mickey and Dillon Joyce with the helpers on his. WVU would score late but Robert Morris took a 2-1 lead into first intermission.

Discontent with having a one goal lead, the Colonials got to work on their next power play opportunity. Steven Ralston and Noah Raymundo set up center Tanner Orr to knock home RMU's third goal of the game, giving them a 3-1 lead. The defense would be rock steady for the remainder of the second, and the Colonials took a 3-1 lead to the final period. 

West Virginia would attempted a comeback bid, and an early 3rd period goal brought them back within one. However, Robert Morris would strike just after a power play had concluded to reopen the lead to 4-2. Dillon Joyce got the goal for his second point of the night. Nathan Mickey and Andrew Hachmeister got the assists, giving each of them 2 assists on the evening. WVU would get one more goal late, but goaltender Lewis Richardson shut the door and the Colonials picked up the 4-3 win.
