Women's Rugby finishes regular season 7-5.

10/15/2019 2:01:00 PM

Moon, PA- Women's Rugby had an opportunity to host Fairmont State over the weekend for their final 3 game set of the season. RMU entered the contest with a 6-3 record and were looking to add some more into the win column. It was a beautiful autumn day at Joe Walton Stadium, and a good crowd came out to support the team. Fairmont State would take the first two game by scores of 25-10 and 15-10, but RMU would bounce back to take game 3 22-15, and will finish the regular season with a record of 7-5. RMU had plenty of depth in this game, which was key to getting better as the day progressed and ultimately taking the 3rd game. This year's team is the largest it has been since Fall 2016.

Game 1: RMU loses 25-10

The team started the day sluggish against Fairmont State who went up 15-0 at half time. A strong run by Nicole Kepple for her second try of the season got Robert Morris on the board, but they answered quickly with another try. Freshmen Samantha Zeleznik dotted one in the corner at the end of the match, but RMU could not overcome their first half deficit.

Game 2: RMU loses 15-10

With a large roster, each match had a different starting line up. Game 2 saw Alyssa Interthal start and play in her first rugby match ever after joining the team late in the season. The team again got off to a slow start letting a quick try to start the game. The match when back in and forth and with second half tries from Maddie Bashore and Ciera Thompson, it still wasn't enough to take the win over Fairmont's speedy wings who scored all but one try for them on the day. RMU played better than they had in Game 1, but time was running out to pick up a win in front of the home crowd.

Game 3: RMU wins 22-15

Finally RMU started off on the front foot with Morgan Schneider scoring the first try of the match giving RMU its first lead of the day. Fairmont immediately answered scoring two quick tries to regain the lead. Bri Allen shook some defenders to dot down a try in the 6th minute of play to set up a needed conversion by Corenne Burrows to put RMU back in the lead 12-10, but Fairmont managed to close the half with another break away regaining the lead 15-12. After some halftime substitutions, RMU showed their depth to come away with a win. Off the bench, veteran leader Ciera Thompson scored twice in the second half while the entire team worked to contain Fairmont's speed.

The team will now have a few weeks to prepare before getting ready for the ARU Championship Tournament. The tournament will be held at Alderson Broaddus University on November 2nd.
