Pittsburgh, PA- The Men's Club Soccer Team played a tough doubleheader over the weekend against Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. The first match saw the Colonials dominate in all aspects of the game from possession, offensive chances, and ultimately the scoreboard as they picked up a strong 4-0 win against Duquesne. However, a 15 minute layoff was not a long enough break for the Colonials, who struggled to get anything going against Pitt in what ended a losing effort 3-0.
Game 1: RMU wins 4-0
This game from start to finish was RMU's
match. The team possessed the ball well, made smart decisions on both sides of the ball, and had good vision for finding teammates all match long. Winger
Lennon Zrimsek had a stellar game, finishing a couple of beautiful plays to give RMU an early lead they would never get close to giving away. Zrimsek's two goals helped power RMU to the early 2-0 advantage.
Chidubem Ogele was a mid-match substitution for the Colonials, and it payed dividends before the matches end. The speedy sub flew down the field on the breakaway and buried the opportunity, giving RMU the 3-0 lead. Starting Striker Brandon Byers netted his 3rd goal of the season with a late goal to cap off the match. A 4-0 clean sheet victory to improve to 3-1-1 on the season.
Game 2: RMU loses 3-0
90
minutes of soccer at a collegiate level is tough. Another 90 minutes of it with only minutes in between is even more difficult. The Colonials had a tough time getting anything going in their match against Pitt. Pitt is a strong team this season and they were able to attack RMU's back line effectively since the squad had been fatigued from the prior match. It was a valiant effort from RMU, but it was not meant to be as the team allowed three in a 3-0 loss.
This puts the Colonials at 3-2-1 entering their final match of the season at West Virginia. The club will not be able to match or beat their record from last year, a program best 5-2. However, a win over WVU would go a long way in the final table and for the overall evaluation of the season. It would cement another winning season for the team and would only be 2 points off from where they finished a year prior. The final match of the season against WVU is at 4pm on Saturday, October 5th.
